Music giant EMI faces, with a declining market for “physical” – as opposed to digital – music products and has been working to improve its demand and
supply planning as well as moving to a centralised distribution facility for Europe. The retail services initiative by National Offender Management Services in partnership with DHL Supply Chain and Booker Direct also attracted praise from the judges who recognised the high level of co-operation needed to achieve the results that they have.
Virgin Media’s strategy has involved reconfiguring its supply chain in only a few months, moving to an national distribution centre servicing a network of 52 field store locations and 3,800 front line engineers. The needs of the engineers was a key consideration in the development and included providing high quality facilities for them. World Duty Free has 90 stores in airports across
the UK and is the main retail presence at Eurotunnel. The company has a range of 16,000 active SKUs across 21 categories ranging from liquor, tobacco and confectionery to fragrance, cosmetics and jewellery. It has been working collaboratively with Luxottica – its major supplier in the luxury goods sector – sharing data to forecast sales and stock requirements. By working closely together lead times have been cut from four months to ten days. There have also been benefits in terms of reduced stockholding and overstocks and improvement in availability. The judges were particularly impressed by the commitment and enthusiasm for this collaborative project and concluded that it was a worthy winner.
