Surprise winner of Belgian Supply Chain Award – Project of the Year 2005

In September, the Belgian supply chain Project for the Year 2005 award ceremony took place in Kinepolis Brussels – and there was a surprise in store.

The award is organised by the three Belgian associations, VIB, ABCAL and PICS. The objective is to stimulate investment in innovative supply chain initiatives.

In this time of globalisation, outsourcing and supply chain management are very important for value creation. The organising associations support all professionals who start a project so the supply chain in their company becomes more efficient and integrated. Finalists in the Supply Chain Award are possible candidates for the European Award for Logistics Excellence, organised by ELA.

This year’s finalists were:

  • Arcelor – Implementation of a new supply chain between Dunkerque and Liège
  • AXA – Procurement Centralisation Program
  • AZ Groeninge – Supply Chain Management: efficient logistics in healthcare
  • Cat Logistics – Supply Chain Improvement through a successful aftermarket distribution start-up project
  • Solvay – How to change supplier relationships from traditional negotiation to innovative collaboration

The public prize went to Cat Logistics but the unexpected winner of Project of the Year was AZ Groeninge.

The professional jury used criteria including innovation, added value and integration of different aspects of the supply chain. The innovative aspect was especially examined from the point of view of the hospital sector.

Beside the Award, the associations reward students for essays on a supply chain topic. The winner of that competition receives the PICS/VIB Prize for the best Master’s thesis in supply chain management. This year it was Christophe Theys for his thesis concerning ‘Critical study of the methods to define the routes for order pickers in warehouses’.
