Winner: Unilever Supply Chain Company
Although there were plenty of worthy initiatives under the “Climate Change” heading, there were three entries that really stood out. Coca-Cola Enterprises introduced a number of moves to reduce its environmental impact. The company has brought in bio-fuel vehicles to make internal stock movements, it has focused on increasing backhaul routes – reducing road miles by 371,575 miles in 2010 compared to 2009, and it has implemented a box backhaul solution for some wholesale customers.
Vodafone has adopted a holistic approach to managing and reducing environmental impacts across the value chain. The company is working with its suppliers to reduce CO2 emissions with 12 suppliers at present, representing 22 per cent of relevant procurement spend, and is reducing energy needed for air conditioning at nearly 37,000 sites, saving 35,000 tonnes of CO2 a year. In addition, the company is using E-TASC (Electronics – tool for accountable supply chains) to work with environmentally enlightened suppliers.
Unilever Supply Chain Company has a vision to decouple business growth from environmental impact, something it hopes to achieve through its Sustainable Living Plan. It has committed to keeping 2020 CO2 emissions from the global logistics network on a level at or below those of 2010 – despite significantly higher volumes – equating to a 40 per cent efficiency improvement. Over the last three years absolute CO2 emissions from Unilever’s European warehouse network has been reduced by 33 per cent and energy consumption by 17 per cent. Initiatives have included solar panels on warehouse roofs, intelligent lighting and grey water harvesting. Analysis of vehicle load fill on key lanes has also been used to drive improvements in CO2 consumption, resulting in the use of double-deck trailers where appropriate. In addition, Unilever has defined four sustainability KPIs and developed an externally accredited methodology to track performance. The Award went to Unilever.
