Banana distributors Fyffes and Chiquita are looking for annual supply chain savings of some £24m ($40m) from the merger of the two businesses.
The merger is expected to take place before the end of 2014 and will create ChiquitaFyffes, a business with sales of some £2.8 billion ($4.6bn).
Efficiencies in logistics and procurement are top of the list for the new organisation which expects to achieve £24m annual savings by 2016.
Chiquita is based in Charlotte, North Carolina, USA. It has sales of $3bn a year and its brands include Chiquita and Fresh Express.
Dublin-based Fyffes has an annual turnover in excess of $1.5 billion. It has operations in Europe, the US Central and South America and has begun operations in Asia.
